Kerala doctor in UAE becomes a victim of fake news
Kozhikode: Along with Coronavirus, fake news is spreading on a daily basis. By circulating old videos and killing those people who are still very much alive, certain section of the society is causing trouble for others. A Keralite doctor practicing in the UAE is at the receiving end of one such fake news. Ponnani native Riyas Usman’s photo has been circulated as the doctor who passed away in Delhi while treating coronavirus patients. The fact is that such an incident has not been reported so far in Delhi.
A few days back, a doctor named Usama Riyas died in Pakistan due coronavirus disease. It was following this that fake news about the death of a doctor in Delhi started going around. The photo that went with the news was that of Riyas Usman. The culprits used the photo that was available in the hospital website. The news was mainly circulated in the Facebook pages from Karnataka and North India.
Dr Riyas Usman told Mathrubhumi that the fake news is being circulated in WhatsApp and TikTok as well. He came to know about it when the supervisor of his apartment called his wife and informed her.
A real estate agent had asked the supervisor if it was the doctor living in the apartment who passed away due to coronavirus. The supervisor also sent the screen shot of the fake news that was circulating.
The next day people started calling from all over, including from USA. That was when he understood that the fake news was circulated widely. So he immediately started reporting under each Faceboook post. But soon realized that it was not enough.
As the fake news circulated widely, people including his own patients started calling him. Riyas Usman revealed that he informed the hospital authorities and that he will take necessary action on the incident. He has been working in UAE since 2016.
