New Delhi: The Delhi High Court directed Shajan Skariah, editor of news portal ‘Marunadan Malayalee’ to remove all the defamatory content published against billionaire businessman M A Yusuff Ali from social media platforms.

Failure to do so, the court has directed Google and Youtube to suspend the channel. Shajan was summoned by the court in the case.

Earlier, Yusuff Ali had filed a suit against the new portal for publishing defamatory content against him and his business groups. The business giant pleaded legal action against Shajan Skariah and his channel, for continuously running malicious campaigns against his family and firms on online platforms. He demanded a hefty compensation for the online onslaught as well.

Senior advocate and former attorney general Mukul Rohtagi appeared on behalf of Yusuff Ali in the case.

The court noted that even though the right to free speech and expression is a vital part of an effective democracy, abusing one’s freedom to defame others is unacceptable.

‘Marunadan Malayalee’ had argued that Yusuff Ali’s suit was not maintainable before the Delhi HC. Notwithstanding the channel’s argument, Justice Chandra Dhari issued an ultimatum to its editor. The case will be considered again on August 22.
