Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Opposition leader VD Satheesan and state LSGD and Excise Minister MB Rajesh expressed their concerns over the union government’s slashing of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) allocation in the budget 2023-24 presented on Wednesday.

According to Satheesan, the government strangled MGNREGA to death. He compared the previous year’s allocation with the present announcement and noted that the reduction is Rs 29,400 crore.

While Rajesh termed, the union government’s move as a surgical strike on poor people in the country. At least Rs 2.72 lakh crore had to be allocated, he opined.

Earlier, the state Finance Minister KN Balagopal in his presser related to the budget noted that allocations in major schemes including MGNREGA, food subsidy and for the procurement of rice and wheat were cut down drastically.
