Two from Thrissur arrested for spending Rs 2.44 cr credited by mistake into their account

Thrissur: Police booked two youth for extravagantly spending money that was credited wrongly in one of their accounts.

Arimpur natives Nidhin and Manu had transferred and spent around Rs 2.44 cr from their account. Crime branch has recorded their arrest.

When bank officials found that the account was credited with a huge sum of money, the accused started to spend it. They bought new phones, cleared debts, bought shares and transferred the rest of the money to 54 accounts in 19 banks. A total of 171 transactions were conducted.

The Bank noticed the mismatches only later. They then filed a complaint with the police.

The bank where the accused held the account is on a merger process. Bank officials said the money was credited by mistake during this process.

Except for a few lakhs, the rest was recovered from the accused. Police said they should have informed the bank about the discrepancy instead of spending the money.
