Thrissur: Supplyco stores witnessed a huge rush as the market price of dried red chillies crossed Rs 300 recently. In most of the stores, the crowd is being controlled by issuing tokens.
Queues begin in front of the Supplyco outlets early morning and the stocks of the dried red chillies run out immediately. In certain locales even WhatsApp groups were formed to inform the arrival of the dried red chillies by making Supplyco staff or locals as admins.
A cardholder can buy half a kilogram of dried red chillies under the subsidy rate. Supplyco charges Rs 39 for a half kilogram packet.
Around 150 to 200 tokens are issued daily in many outlets. Though other grocery items are also sold, dried red chillies have more demand now, said the officials.
The price of dried red chillies touched Rs 200 in February 2022. Usually the price of dried red chillies drop in January and February as it is the period of harvest. However, the price hike was caused last year due to the unprecedented floods recorded in the producer states. Currently, the branded chilly powder costs from Rs 330 in the state.
