Kochi: The export of rice (except Basmati rice) from Kerala is declining. In 2020-21, 85,470.29 tonnes of rice were exported from the state and the revenue earned was Rs 359.14 crores.
During 2021-22, the state's revenue from rice exports has come down to Rs 299.81 crore. Only 71,551.66 tonnes of rice were shipped during this period.
With this, Kerala's share in the country's total rice exports has come down by 0.41 per cent. In 2020-21, it was around one per cent.
During the current financial year (2022-23) from April to August, the export of 36,142.14 tonnes earned Rs 179.24 crore.
Rice varieties falling under the IR-64 category, including brown and raw rice, are major exports from Kerala. It has high quality and low price and has a favourable demand in Africa and Gulf Countries. Currently, Kerala is placed 19th on the list of states exporting rice abroad.
