Tirur: The price of jasmine flowers touched a new high in view of Christmas and increasing number of marriages here. One kilogram of jasmine saw a hike of Rs 1000 a day. The low production of jasmine flowers due to winter also affected the price.

In January 2021, the cost of jasmine flowers hit Rs 5000 per kilogram. However, the price declined by Rs 300 in the months of April, May and June, which are considered to be the season for jasmine sales.

Jasmine flowers are mainly transported from Madurai, Dindigul, Pollachi and Coimbatore to Kerala. A variety of jasmine, ‘Kudamulla’, was sold for Rs 1300 per kg on Wednesday and Thursday in Tirur market. The price rose to Rs 1600 on Friday and Rs 2600 on Saturday.

‘Arimulla’ which cost Rs 800 on Wednesday touched Rs 2000 on Saturday.

The steep price hike has lowered the demand for jasmine in the market.
