Kozhikode: The price of Jasmine flowers hit a record in the Onam season. On Friday, the cost of Jasmine flowers touched Rs 100 per ‘muzham’ (cubit) in Kozhikode Palayam market. Following Vinayaka Chathurthi, the transportation of Jasmine flowers declined from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and this caused a sudden hike in price, said the flower hawkers.

The workers, who string flowers in the neighbouring states, usually rest after Ganeshotsav. This added to a shortage of flowers in the market.

The Jasmine flowers cost only Rs 30- RS 40 for a ‘muzham’ in the last week. The customers, who reached to buy flowers for marriage functions and Onam celebrations were troubled by the high price.

Jasmine flowers were not available in many places, even though the customers were ready to pay a high price. Jasmine flowers were mostly brought to Kozhikode from Coimbatore, Madurai and Chennai. The adverse climatic condition and floods have also affected the transportation of flowers to the state.
