Mumbai: A Malayali jewellery shop owner and his son have been arrested in connection with the seizure of 16 kg of smuggled gold from Mumbai International Airport. Muhammadali and his son Shabeeb Ali, who run a jewellery shop in Dubai, were caught by officials of the Revenue Intelligence Directorate.

On April 24, 16.36 kg of smuggled gold was seized at Mumbai International Airport. 18 people from Sudan were arrested that day for hiding the gold in mixed form. Revenue Intelligence officials received intelligence about them arriving on various flights from the UAE, leading to their arrest. Suhail Poonawala, Yunus Sheikh, Govind Rajput, Muhammad Alam, and Muhammad Usman were among those arrested prior to the arrest of Mohammadali and Shabeeb.

Revenue Intelligence officials have stated that they are part of a gold smuggling racket. Govind Rajput, who runs a jewellery business in Zaveri Bazaar, allegedly bought the smuggled gold. His shop was raided and 85 lakh rupees were seized.
