Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 against a youth for hiding information on a habeas corpus plea. A habeas corpus petition was filed to release his girlfriend from her parent's custody.

H Shameer, a Kattakada native, filed a habeas corpus petition in the High Court claiming that his lover, Anjana, a Neyyatinkara native, is placed under illegal detention by her father and brother. However, he failed to inform the court that he is already married under the Special Marriages Act and divorce proceedings are pending.

He added that he had filed a divorce petition in a family court and the proceedings in the divorce plea is pending. He expects a favourable verdict.

However, the high court viewed that it was not right to file a petition hiding a crucial information. The division bench comprising Justice Alexander Thomas and Justice Sofi Thomas directed the petitioner to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 to the media centre of the high court.

Meanwhile, the girl in custody of the family informed court that she wanted to live with Shameer. The court directed the petitioner to file an affidavit detailing his previous marriage and divorce proceedings.
