Kollam: Kerala Police nabbed two youths, who allegedly swindled lakhs from quarry owners in the guise of geologists. The accused are Neyyattinkara native Rahul and Kozhikode native Neethu S Paul.
The suspects made a fake WhatsApp account with the profile picture of the district geologist in Kollam and demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from a quarry owner to renew the licence. The prime accused Rahul took the second accused Neethu to Kottiyam in a taxi car to receive the amount and the duo returned soon after collecting the amount from the quarry owner.
The quarry owner did not get his licence renewed even days after paying the money. Meanwhile, he found the suspects' WhatsApp account and phone number blocked. It was only after contacting the geologist’s office in Kollam that he realised about the scam. Soon he lodged a complaint while the geologist registered a similar complaint with cyber police.
The cyber police arrested the suspects by collecting call details and WhatsApp messages. Police reported that the accused bought a mobile phone and SIM card by submitting the personal details and documents of a Thiruvananthapuram native.
