Thiruvananthapuram: Youth Congress burnt a motorbike on Monday during their protest march to the Assembly against the Kerala Budget 2023. The fire was extinguished by the fire force, who were present at the spot. Police used water cannons against the protesters.

Opposition leader VD Satheesan, who addressed the protesters, said that the state’s economy would derail if the announcements made in the budget were to be implemented.

The opposition leader said that four MLAs, Shafi Parambil, Mathew Kuzhalnadan, CR Mahesh and Najeeb Kanthapuram, have started a sit-in protest. The MLAs launched the sit-in protest at the entrance of the Assembly when the House took up discussion on the budget.

Kuzhalnadan said the opposition would continue its protest till the government withdraws its proposal to impose a cess on fuel.

The UDF is planning a day and night protest against the budget on February 13.

Meanwhile, finance minister KN Balagopal criticised the opposition and said that the government cannot take a stand to not collect tax at all. The opposition leader is silent about the union government's policies, he said.
