kollam chavara police station
Kollam: The relatives of the youth who committed suicide laid siege to the Chavara police station on Friday here. Relatives and friends of Ashwanth protested in front of the police station with his body, alleging that he committed suicide due to police torture.
The family alleges that a police officer objected to Ashwanth's relationship with his daughter and filed a complaint at the Chavara police station alleging that Ashwanth was troubling his daughter.
Based on the complaint, Ashwanth was summoned to the station. The family alleges that Ashwanth was subjected to mental torture at the station prompting him to commit suicide.
The family left the station premises after Chavara MLA Dr Sujith Vijayan Pillai and former minister Shibu Baby John promised an inquiry into the incident and strict action against officials if found guilty.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and Kollam City Police Commissioner will probe the incident. The CCTV footage in the police station will be examined as part of the probe.
