Youth allegedly beaten up by police for urinating on police quarters walls
Malappuram: Cousins were allegedly beaten up by police for urinating on the walls of the police quarters building at Kannur. The incident happened on January 22 when Athuljith,17, a class 12 student of the Govt. Boy's High School, Tirur and his cousin Abhijith,26 were returning from the state youth festival at Kannur.
The young men had apparently urinated on the walls of the police quarters building outside the Gateway hotel where the festival contingent had gone to have dinner along with the others. The boys allegedly urinated on the walls only to be reprimanded by a woman from the top floor of the quarters.
The boys responded that they have already started urinating and will leave after finishing it to which the woman responded that she will see into it that the matter is taken care of. By the time the boys reached the hotel to have dinner, a police jeep drove in and the boys were dragged out and beaten up.
The police went on a rampage till MLA, James Mathew and district panchayat president K V Sumesh intervened and took the unconscious teenager to AKG hospital. Minister K T Jaleel also reached the hospital soon. Athuljith who suffered serious injuries in his stomach is still under treatment. The woman who had complained had also come goading them into not reporting the incident. The next day the police recorded Athul's and his father's statements. But despite this no action has apparently been taken against the policemen responsible, said Mr. Vijayan, Athuljith's father who has submitted a complaint to the DGP and the Chief Minister.
