Devotees praying at churches

Kochi: Easter- The day of resurrection of Jesus after many long days of torture and crucifixion. Christians all across the world are celebrating Resurrection Sunday in a grand manner after two years of limited festivities and celebrations due to the Covid pandemic situation. Devotees are pouring into churches to attend midnight Mass and special prayers.

The ceremonies at various churches across the state were completed by Saturday night and Sunday morning. Major Archbishop Mar George Alencherry gave sermons at St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica in Ernakulam.

Pope Francis headed the ceremonies held in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

Pope Francis on Saturday invoked “gestures of peace in these days marked by the horror of war” in an Easter vigil homily at St. Peter’s Basilica that was attended by the mayor of the occupied Ukrainian city of Melitopol and three members of Ukraine's parliament. Francis did not refer directly to Russia’s invasion but has called, apparently in vain, for an Easter truce to reach a negotiated peace.
