Workers demand ‘nokkukooli’, NH maintenance works stalled in Alappuzha
Alappuzha: The road maintenance works along the National Highway had to be stopped after AITUC trade union members demanded ‘nokkukooli’ while unloading the interlock tiles.
The work to lay interlock tiles on the walk way in front of the SD College here was undertaken following the special directions from local MLA and PWD Minister G Sudhakaran.
However, the trade union workers voiced objection and demanded Rs 2000 as ‘nokkukooli’ from the contractors for unloading the tiles. Though the contractors agreed to provide Rs 1,200, they stuck to their demand of Rs 2,000 per load.
After the contractors rejected the demand, AITUC men asked the 15 workers who had come for the interlocking works to return. Consequently, the work has to be stopped.
Meanwhile, AITUC District Secretary Mohandas said the trade union members have not demanded ‘nokkukooli’ and the contractors’ allegations are false. No complaint has been received by District Collector, Labour Officer or the AITUC leaders in this regard, he added.
