Won't allow Triple Talaq Bill to be passed in RS: Venugopal
Kochi: Congress MP KC Venugopal declared that he will not allow to pass the triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha. He noted that neither UDF nor UPA is confused over the stand on the bill.
Addressing the media here, he stated that opposition members unanimously oppose triple talaq bill.
“Opposition will not support the passing of triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha. All 10 opposition parties had expressed strong disapproval when the bill was presented in Lok Sabha. Though we demanded to forward it for the approval of standing committee, the government refused to do it,” said Venugopal.
Congress MPs, other opposition members and AIADMK who support NDA government had also opposed the bill. When government refused to accept it, opposition had walked out from the house.
He criticised the inclusion of a criminal provision that impose 3 years long imprisonment for triple talaq.
“The bill won’t promote women empowerment. Relevant facts were noted while opposing the bill,” he added.
Lok Sabha had passed triple talaq bill in 2017. It was not passed in Rajya Sabha as Congress and other opposition parties strongly opposed it. Because of this, it was reintroduced as an ordinance and represented in Lok Sabha the other day.
MP KC Venugopal stated that Congress will not allow NDA government to pass the bill in Rajya Sabha.
Meanwhile, responding to the absence of MP PK Kunhalikutty in the discussion on triple talaq bill, he stated that it is the matter within Muslim League. He stated that Kunhalikutty has given an explanation to his party on his absence in the discussion.
