Kozhikode: Mayor Beena Philip said the Kozhikode corporation would not abandon the proposed sewage treatment plants (STP) under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme at Avikkal Canal and Kothi.

Her remark comes amidst reports of the corporation planning to shelve the project.

Earlier, the construction activities were temporarily halted after the Rs 140-crore project met with widespread protest from the local fishermen community in Kozhikode.

However, the corporation is racing against the clock to complete the project before March 31 deadline of the AMRUT scheme. The Mayor noted that the corporation would soon seek additional time to complete the project. She added that they would inform the concerned officials that the construction was delayed due to court proceedings.

Less than 20% of the construction work has been completed so far. For several months, protests were ongoing in Avikkal against the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant. Though the Police removed the protesters' shed here and started construction works, the district Munsiff Court issued an order halting the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant in the area.
