Thiruvananthapuram: The labour department has issued a notification allowing maternity leave and benefits for the staff of private unaided schools in the state.
According to the notification, the staff including teachers of unaided schools will come under the purview of Maternity Benefit Act and they will get paid leave for six months.
The government issued the final notification on Saturday as a Women’s day gift to the private school staff. Though the government had already decided to provide maternity benefits to the staff of unaided schools, it was delayed as the matter required permission from the central government. As the Centre granted permission, the notification was issued finally.
The cabinet meeting on August 29, 2019 had decided to seek the Centre’s permission to issue the notification in this regard. It is for the first time in the country, a state government is including teachers of unaided schools under Maternity Benefit Act. As per this act, the staff is provided 26 weeks (6 months) of paid leave.
