Pathanamthitta: Divya S Iyer, who sworn in as 36th collector of Pathanamthitta, is of the opinion that development is not mere infrastructural development. “In my perspective, development is not limited to infrastructural development. Even sociological factors need to be considered. Women empowerment and ensuring gender justice is important. Such activities will be carried out in the district,” she said.

Pinpointing her interest in making a women-friendly district, Divya shared her reflections and hopes about Pathanamthitta. “It is a district which women are taking leadership in all sectors. The district should be a forerunner in ending social evils like dowry. Pathanamthitta should evolve in to a fully women-friendly place. I wish to take up such activities. The programs will be devised after discussion with health minister Veena George and district police chief R Nishanthini,” she further explained.

The collector who is also a doctor holding MBBS degree is aware about the upcoming challenges during the current COVID-19 pandemic period. However, she affirmed that developmental activities and women empowerment measures will progress, despite the challenges.

“Mitigating COVID-19 in the district is very important. Simultaneously, flood mitigation need to be focused. The district must be flood resilient. In case of COVID, reducing the spread and number of cases is the key. In rural areas, the spread is under control. However, in municipalities, the spread is not subduing as expected. We have to plan measures to tackle that issue,” she added.

According to her, Pathanamthitta is a serene and beautiful place. She is happy that her first appointment was there itself.
