Woman's death in EKM road accident: In rare move, JRTO revokes bike rider's driving license

Kochi: In a rare move, Joint Regional Transport Officer (JRTO) revoked the driving license of the bike rider booked over a road accident that claimed the life of a woman in Thrippunithura. Transport authorities usually suspend the license for a stipulated period and revoking the license is a rarity.

The accident happened near SN Junction on November 17, 2022. According to police, Kanjiramattom native Vishnu in his speeding bike overtook Piravom native Kavya Dhanesh’s scooter from the left side and swiftly crossed her to the right to take a U-turn. She lost her balance and fell on the road. A speeding private bus crushed her to death on the spot. Vishnu was earlier involved in a similar case, which resulted in the death of a cyclist in 2020, said reports.

The transport authority observed that if the person is allowed to drive the vehicle, then it will pose a threat to the public, pedestrians and other fellow drivers. The death of the woman was caused by his negligent driving, it noted.

Meanwhile, the transport authority has also suspended the license of the booked bus driver for six months. The authority in its probe found that the bus did not keep a statutory distance from the vehicle ahead
