Ahmad Hassan Rifai, suspect
Kozhikode: The Koyilandy police have reported that the woman accused of killing her 12-year-old nephew by allegedly poisoning ice cream at Arikkulam in Kozhikode is believed to be mentally ill. According to the police, the suspect murdered her brother's son by offering him ice cream that was apparently mixed with rat poison.
The accused purchased rat poison from a store in Koyilandy Town and later bought a family pack of ice cream from a shop near her house. She has been residing in her ancestral house, which is nearly half a kilometre away from her brother Mohammad Ali’s house.
Upon arriving at Mohammed Ali's residence, only he and his son Ahmad Hassan Rifai were present, as the child's mother and siblings were away at the time. Shortly after consuming the ice cream, the boy began to experience vomiting and exhaustion. Though he was rushed to the hospital, his life could not be saved.
The post mortem examination revealed the presence of a significant amount of chemical substances, including ammonium phosphorus. After conducting a thorough interrogation of close relatives, the suspect admitted to the crime. She informed the police that she had mixed rat poison into the ice cream and disposed of the remaining poison in a ditch behind her house. The police collected evidence from the scene and accompanied the suspect to the stores where she purchased the rat poison and ice cream.
The officials of the health department and food safety department also fetched evidence from the crime scene.
