Woman killed in explosion at cracker unit in Maradu
Kochi: A explosion at a cracker unit in Maradu here on Friday claimed the life of a woman. Another woman sustained serious burns.
The deceased has been identified as Nalini (72), wife of Rajan of Theruvil Padom at TV Junction in Maradu. She died on the spot.
Jalaja, wife of Damodaran of Padathuthara in Maradu, has been admitted to Lakeshore hospital with serious burn injuries.
The accident happed during the production of crackers for the festival of Maradu Kottaram Bhagavati temple. The explosion occurred while the workers were filling gun powder in the crackers at a shed behind the auditorium at Thekke Cheruvarom.
Short circuit is suspected to have triggered the blast. Police presume that the fire spread from the connection of pedal fan.
In the impact of the explosion, a few houses in the vicinity also suffered damages. Fire and rescue Services doused the flames.
Stating that the unit was functioning illegally, District Collector said an appropriate action would be taken against the operators after conducting an enquiry.
