Punnayurkulam: A septuagenarian who suffered fatal injuries after her son set her on fire on Tuesday died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kochi. Sreemathi (75) was set on fire by her son Manoj for refusing to pay money to buy alcohol.
Police informed that Manoj was furious when Sreemathi declined to give money to buy liquor. He initially forced her to give money and beat her. Later, he doused her in kerosene and set her ablaze. His brother Saji, who is blind, was in the house when the incident unfolded. The locals called Sreemathi's daughter and informed about the incident. She was later taken to hospital for treatment.
Manoj was later arrested by the police. He has been undertaking treatment for a mental disorder for the past two years in various hospitals, said police.
