Thrissur: A 37-year-old woman and her 11-year-old daughter drowned in a water-filled pit made for irrigation on a paddy field at Pooppathy in Mala here on Saturday. The deceased are identified as Mala Pallippuram natives Mary Anu, wife of Geo and her daughter Aagna.
The mother and child met with the accident while returning home after visiting a relative.
The duo drowned in the pit made for irrigation purposes by the side of the road near Pooppathy Chuloor temple.
It is reported that Mary Anu accidentally fell into the 15-feet-deep pit while trying to take the chappal of her younger child from the water. Aagna met with the accident while trying to save her mother.
After hearing the screaming of the children, natives rushed to the spot and initiated a search to trace the mother and child. Later, Fire Force reached the spot and took the mother and child from the pit. But both were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
