Kuttanad: A woman was arrested for attacking an elderly woman and stealing her gold jewellery in Kuttanad, Alappuzha. The accused has been identified as Mercy Antony (58), a native of Kuttichira. The incident took place around 7 pm on Friday.

Reportedly, Mercy attacked her mute neighbour Ammini Gopi (67) and stole the bedridden woman’s jewellery. Ammini, who sustained serious injuries to her face and ears, has been admitted to the medical college hospital in Alappuzha.

“Ammini lost her ability to speak after contracting Covid-19. When asked about the attack, she wrote the name of the accused on a sheet of paper,” said the police.

Meanwhile, Mercy was produced before the Judge and has been remanded for 14 days. She will be taken into custody for further investigation, said S Nizam, Pulinkunnu inspector.
