Thrissur: A woman was arrested by the Excise department of Kerala for allegedly promoting liquor use on social media. She posted a short video (reel) on her Instagram account of her enjoying local toddy with her friends at a popular shop here recently. The woman released on default bail.

The video of five young women drinking toddy had gone viral on social media recently. The video was shot during the welcome party for the husband of one of the women, who had arrived from abroad.

Interstingly, excise personnel said she did not drink the toddy and only posed for it to take video. They had questioned the workers at the toddy shop.

Meanwhile, the action of the excise department has invited flak from social media users. Many observed that such videos are not unusual on social media and a case is not normally registered if it features men. Accusing the department of misogyny, they alleged the case was registered only because it was women drinking.
