With a single hartal issue, WhatsApp becomes ‘decent’!
Malappuram: With a single ‘WhatsApp Hartal’ incident, many of the social media activists have become decent. Until recently, the WhatsApp groups were a nuisance for many, with unnecessary messages and videos. Every day, people wake up to see themselves added in new groups without their consent. Those who choose to exit the groups will get frequent messages and calls asking for the reason to leave.
From old nursery classmates to passengers of the same bus, everybody have WhatsApp groups. There is no control in creating groups. Some even find pleasure in boasting that they are admins of more number of groups, while some others leave for not making them admins. But with the WhatsApp Hartal row, majority of them have decided to control themselves.
When five young men, who failed in Plus Two, planned a hartal, the social media activists took up the concept and circulated widely. But they realized the seriousness of their act, only when the police came in search of them. Many of them happened to know that the admins are responsible for all the messages and media posted in a group, only after the issue.
U. Unnikrishnan, a retired employee of Malappuram District Irrigation Department, is admin of 6 WhatsApp groups. He said that religious and political messages have decreased in the groups after the controversial hartal. Also fake messages like stories about missing children used to spread in WhatsApp groups and now they have disappeared.
Now the admins have become more responsible and forbid members from posting unnecessary messages. Rules have been imposed for being part of groups. Those who violate the rules will be removed. People who used to cry over not making admin of a group are now requesting to be removed as admins. Blind forwarding of messages has come down and it is the biggest advantage of the hartal issue.
