Thiruvananthapuram: Transport minister Antony Raju has directed the higher officials to prepare a new list of fares for KSRTC buses from Fast Passengers to Super Class categories.

The ambiguity and legal challenges caused while preparing the first list have to be rectified in the new one.

The minister has asked the officials to prepare the new list with fares within two days.

Special bus fares were introduced when bus services resumed after the Covid-19 lockdown period. The then rationale was to avoid crowding in the buses and the rates were increased by 25 per cent.

However, when the pandemic situation eased, the government did not revoke the special bus fares.

Earlier, CM had rejected the list prepared based on pandemic special rates. Similarly, the transport secretary too had objected. Following that, the minister directed the higher-ups to intervene.

KSRTC will be charging the highest bus fares in the country if the rates are hiked based on pandemic special rates. This might invite legal action too.

Likewise, though LDF okayed private bus fare hike, there is ambiguity over re-fixing the minimum rate fare stage distance as 2.5 km instead of 5 km.
