Will ensure media gets to function smoothly: Pinarayi Vijayan
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that in the wake of coronavirus spreading in the state, the government will ensure that media gets to function smoothly in the state. He said this while speaking with heads of different media organizations via video conferencing.
Media will be given special status as it as an essential service. However, people should not feel that this status is being misused. Channels should make sure that their microphones are disinfected. Also, large groups should be avoided while going for reporting. Newspapers have been urged not to to attach advertisement notices with it.
The Chief Minister also stressed that this is not a time for anxiety and that more importance should be given for positive news. Media should also be careful in making sure that fake and unscientific news is not circulated. The CM also assured that the vehicles of mediapersons will not be blocked and that they will be provided with uninterrupted power supply.
With the possibility of more cases surfacing, the state government has issued directions to legislators in the state to identify the buildings or houses which could be used as isolation wards in case of emergency.
Meanwhile, prohibitory orders have been issued in atleast seven districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Pathnamthitta and Ernakulam.
Four patients who tested positive had been treated and discharged earlier-- three who returned from Wuhan and one from Kannur.
Thrissur district has the most number of people under observation, 10,908, followed by Malappuram with 9,898.
The worst hit Kasaragod district with 45 positive COVID-19 cases has 2,736 people under observation of which 85 are in isolation wards.
Government should intervene to block fake news: MV Shreyams Kumar
Mathrubhumi Joint Managing Director MV Shreyams Kumar said that certain people are circulating fake news that coronavirus can spread through newspapers. These people put extra effort and see to it that right information does not reach people. The government should intervene to block such fake news, said MV Shreyams Kumar.
He also said that Newspapers and News Channels take the right news to the people. Mathrubhumi newspaper is taken for distribution after being disinfected and is printed and sent for distribution using only machines. Human touch is not involved until this process. He also informed the Chief Minister that the company provides gloves to all those who distributes newspapers.
Mathrubhumi News Chief of News Unni Balakrishnan said that Mathrubhumi Television has created opportunities for audiences to clear their doubts regarding COVID-19.
