Kozhikode: The wild elephant that was rescued from an unused well in Anakkampoyil here has died. The jumbo had collapsed near the same place the other day. The officials stated that dehydration resulted in the death. They had also provided food and water to the jumbo after rescuing it from the well.
The wild elephant was rescued from the well after 14 hours of long effort on Friday. Earlir, it was reported that the elephant had no serious injuries. However, the jumbo collapsed a little far from here. The forest department officials were expecting that the elephant was likely to return to forest the next day.
The elephant had fallen into well at Anakkampoyil near Thiruvambady here. The major challenge before the rescue team was the difficulty to reach the spot. They had to walk 4 kilometres to come near the well.
Later, an excavator was brought to the place and a canal dug to the well and helped the elephant come out. The plantation where the elephant met with the accident is owned by a farmer named Josekutty. As the well is located near the forest border, people came to know about the incident very late.
The locals said that the elephant had fallen into the well three days ago. It is learnt that the people who were residing in the area later shifted due to frequent attack of wild animals.
