Wild elephant dies in Chinnakanal; 3rd death within a month
Munnar: A wild tusker died at Chinnakanal in Idukki district in a plantation estate belonging to ADGP Tomin Thachankary’s brother. This is third death reported from the Munnar-Marayur forest range within a period of one month.
The carcass of a 11-year-old female elephant was found in the estate and according to preliminary reports, it would have suffered electric shock leading to its death. The Forest officials have reached the place and an enquiry has been ordered for seeking more details on the death.
The estate is guarded by solar electric fence and authorities feel that the elephant would have suffered shock from the fence. The fencing has been installed with electricity cutting off at regular intervals. This is being done to prevent electrocution of animals. But when there is no solar power, the fencing gets charged from other source and it must be at this time the elephant would have tried crossing into the estate.
With rise in elephants straying into human settlements, attacks against them too have risen. Last month, an elephant was injured by a mud escavator and later succumbed to the injuries at Munnar Chenduvara.
