Wild boars enjoy a free run: create massive crop loss
Thennilapuram: The pet dogs may bark violently at night but the locals have no option but to turn a blind eye towards the cacophony, for getting out may mean landing in front of a herd of raiding wild boars. The farmers of Thennilapuram, Cheenikkode, Aayikkode, Kazhani, Kunnumpuram and Mundan Colony premises have been so scared of the menace that leave alone protecting their farms they are not even able to let their children play in the courtyards for fear of attacks.
The raiders have already levelled the vegetable gardens in the homesteads. They are also attacking the tuber crop fields finishing the yield in a go. The plantain and paddy fields are also under attack. The produce all ready for harvest, being levelled and eaten has been pushing the farmers into an intense sense of worry and insecurity.
The farmers have been guarding their farms round the clock. Placing white sacks and cloth and beating drums and bursting crackers at night, they are making attempts to chase the wild animals.
Apart from the boars, the peacocks descending in large musters have been feasting on the ripe paddy from the field in the region. Years ago, the valley regions in the area had experienced a similar problem but this time the reach of the raiders have expanded to cover larger regions thus magnifying losses. With the time of harvest approaching, the farmers have been left in a fix as to whom to turn to for help.
