Kochi: The Kerala High Court has directed the state government to inform its stand on the matter of curfew timing at ladies’ hostel of Kozhikode medical college on Wednesday. The court asked why adults should not be allowed to go anywhere they like. The Kerala Women’s Commission will also inform its stand on Wednesday.

As per the current rule at the Kozhikode medical college ladies’ hostel, students should enter the premises by 10 pm. Students started protesting against the rule.

The female students said that the library and other facilities at the college were open till 11:30 pm. Due to the curfew they could not make proper use of these facilities, students added.

There is no curfew at the boys’ hostel. Similar protests have been held at Alappuzha and Thrissur medical colleges.

The women’s commission also intervened in the matter. The students approached the high court against the curfew imposed at the hostel following this.

While considering the petition, justice Devan Ramachandran asked if such discriminations were necessary.
