Malappuram: Air Customs is hesitant to take up smuggling cases in which police have seized gold from Karipur airport.

The reason is that police are not adhering to related procedures and Air Customs is not interested to be held accountable for possible lapses. As a result, such smuggling cases are now handled by Kozhikode Customs.

Basically, gold smuggling and hawala cases comes under the ambit of central agencies like Enforcement Directorate and Customs that have quasi-judicial powers.

However, since last February, police too are engaged in nabbing smugglers. According to latest figures, police have seized a total of 60kg of gold.

One of the major issue is that police are willing to handover the seized gold only before the court. Air Customs alleges that the police are doing to get fame even as the mandates say gold can be handed over directly.

Police made a counter allegation saying that Air Customs is embarrassed that smugglers are escaping from their hands.

While, Air Customs pointed out that a minimum of two witnesses is required at the time of seizure and such things are not being followed by police.
