Kozhikode: Following media report about female circumcision being practised at certain centres in the state, activists of Youth League, the youth wing of the Muslim League, forced closure of one such centre in Kozhikode.

The Youth League members who took out a protest march to the centre on Sunday, barged into the building and forced the shutdown of the establishment.

An investigation by Mathrubhumi team had found that such centres are active in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. They had found that women and children are being subjected to the illegal practice at these centres by promising various health benefits.

The Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) process involves altering or injuring female genital organs by ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons.

According to World Health Organisation, more than 200 million girls and women across 30 countries, who are alive today, have been subjected to FGM. International agencies have described the practice as child abuse and a violation of human rights.
