Kozhikode: The whereabouts of Deepak, a Meppayur native, who went missing on June 7, remain shrouded in mystery despite the family performing a funeral with a wrong body. "If the body we burnt on the pyre after paying our last rites is not that of Deepak, then where is my son? asks Sreelatha, Deepak's mother, and the rest of his family.

On July 17, the relatives identified a body found on Koyilandy Nandi beach to be of Deepak(36), who went missing for almost a month, and the family had no clue where he was. Later, they cremated the body on July 19. However, a DNA test on the samples collected from the body revealed that the deceased is not Deepak.

Deepak, who was working in Abu Dhabi, returned to Kerala after losing his job during the Covid pandemic. Following this, he was working with his friends in a textile shop. Later, he left for Ernakulam by informing his family that he need to complete formalities for new Visa. It was not the first time he had similarly gone AWOL. Earlier, he was missing for three days to meet a friend to borrow some money. Back then, the family filed a missing complaint before the police. However, he returned after three days.

However, when he left the home on July 7, the family thought he would return soon. As a result, the family failed to file a complaint on time. Further, Deepak also told one of the relatives that his phone was about to die when contacted. This was the last call that came from his phone. Deepak also told his friends that he used to visit some people to borrow Rs 10 lakh for starting a business.
