Thodupuzha: The UDF and Kerala Congress are observing a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Idukki seeking exemption of agricultural farmlands and human habitations from the ecologically fragile zones demarcated in the Kasturirangan report on Western Ghats.

The hartal supporters blocked vehicles in various parts of the district.

Kumily witnessed tense moments after the vehicles from Tamil Nadu were stopped. Further, police intervened and allowed passage of vehicles. Also, altercations ensued as vehicles belonging to tourists were blocked at Munnar.

Though the KSRTC buses plied in the early hours of the day, the services were later suspended owing to the protest.

However, services to other districts were unaffected.

Apart from Idukki district, hartal is being observed in Melukavu, Theekoyi, Poonjar Thekkekara, Koottickal and Poonjar panchayats in Kottayam district and eight panchayats in Pathanamthitta which are notified as ecologically fragile zones.
