We are not responsible, says Maradu flat builders
Kochi: The builders of the controversial flats in Maradu municipality here on Sunday said that they were not responsible for the ongoing issues. Stating that the flats had been sold to the owners according to law, the builders said they were no longer responsible.
The builders also sent a letter to the municipal secretary in this regard. The response comes at a time when political parties and others were stating that officials and builders were responsible for the current situation.
Earlier, the Maradu municipality had issued a notice to the flat builders following the Supreme Court order to demolish the buildings before September 20. It is in response to this notice that the builders have sent a letter to the municipality.
According to the builders, the flats were constructed and sold adhering to the law. Hence they are no longer responsible. Moreover, the flat owners are the ones paying the taxes and it is their responsibility, the builders said in the letter. The builders also asked why the municipality issued a notice to them.
Meanwhile, the deadline for vacating the flats ends on Sunday. The residents are firm on their stance that they will not vacate the buildings no matter what. At the same time, various political parties and their leaders have already come out in support of the residents and have assured them of all possible help.
Governor Arif Mohammad Khan also said that he would intervene in the issue. The residents are planning to move the high court on Monday challenging the eviction notice.
It remains to be seen what the local administration and state government does next as the Maradu municipality already announced that it will evict the residents only after directions from the government.
