Wayanad tiger attack: Holiday for educational institutions, UDF hartal on Friday

Mananthavady: The Wayanad district collector announced a holiday for all educational institutions in Thondernad and Thavinhal grama panchayats on Friday in the wake of a tiger killing a farmer in Puthussery.

Opposition UDF has announced a hartal in Thondernad grama panchayat on Friday from 6 am to 6 pm. UDF alleged that the poor condition of Wayanad Medical College Hospital led to the death of Thomas, the victim of the attack. Thomas, who suffered grave injuries, was first taken to the medical college in the district and was referred to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. However, on the way he suffered a heart attack and was taken to Kainatty general hospital and then to a private hospital in Kalpetta.

UDF has also demanded the government to pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation and provide a job to a family member of the victim.

Forest minister AK Saseendran had announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the family.

On Thursday morning, a stray tiger attacked Thomas while he was working in his field near his house. He later died at hospital.
