Wayanad farmer who set fire in his rubber grove dies of asphyxiation

Mananthavady: A veteran farmer was killed in a fire on his agricultural land in Wayanad on Tuesday. Mananthavady native Thomas (77), the victim, had set the dry leaves in his rubber grove on fire, which took his life too.

The accident happened at around 3.30 pm near his house. He had informed his daughter about setting fire. The neighbours who noticed unusual fire activity in the area informed the fireforce.

The officers came without an ambulance thinking it would be a regular fire accident in the farmlands. They found Thomas while dousing the fire and immediately took him to Medical College Hospital in their vehicle. However, he was declared brought-dead.

It is assumed that he died of asphyxiation due to the smoke.

The body will be handed over to the family after the inquest on Wednesday.
