Kalpetta: Wayanad SP G Poonkuzhali has refuted the allegations on Maoist encounter in Wayanad. She stated that the encounter was not one-sided move of the police against the Maoists.

Maoists and police fired each other during the gun battle. The bullet injuries may have led to Velmurugan’s death, she added.

She also noted that none of the police officials who were engaged in the encounter suffered any injuries.

“Velmurugan’s body was recovered after 3 hours long inspection. Post-mortem of his body is on progress. The cause of his death will be confirmed after obtaining the post-mortem report. Police have recovered gun and explosives possessed by Velmurugan. He was booked under 7 UAPA cases in Wayanad. He is named as the first accused in the police station attack case registered in Odisha. Many cases were registered against him in Tamil Nadu also. In 2015, the government has announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh to the person who gives any information on Velmurugan. He was engaged in Maoist activities for 15 years," said SP Poonkuzhali.

She alerted the public to inform the police if anyone with injuries seeks medical care in any hospital. Orders regarding this were already issued in Coimbatore, Ootty and Mysuru.
