Kumily: Water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam has reached 142 feet. The water level continues to rise due to heavy rain in the catchment areas. The 13 spillway shutters have been opened to let out the excess water.

It is first time in history that the water level in the dam has touched 142 feet, which is its maximum capacity.

The district collector instructed the people living within the limit of 100 metres on the banks of Periyar to shift to safer places. The district administration and State Disaster Management Authority have taken all necessary precautions.

With the water level rising to 140 feet, the Tamil Nadu government had opened the shutters on Wednesday at 2.30 am releasing 4490 cubic feet of water in a second through the spillway.

Earlier, in a press release, Kerala Chief Secretary had informed that the water from the dam will be released into the Periyar river as the water level is rising.
