Thodupuzha: The water level in Idukki dam is inching close to its full capacity as heavy rains lashed the catchment area.
A high alert has been declared in the areas near the dam. The water level in the dam at present is 2402. 35 ft. The full capacity of the dam is 2403 ft.
Considering the amount of rains being received at present, it is evaluated that the water level in the dam will rise to the full capacity on Friday itself.
At present, 15 lakh litres of water is being released per second from the dam.
The district administration has not given approval to release more water.
The authorities have taken the stand that more water cannot be released as people are already facing difficulties due to the floods.
Idukki district collector said a decision in this regard can be taken only after discussing with the Ernakulam district administration.
However, the KSEB stand is that water should be released from the dam at the same rate as that of the inflow into the dam.
The catchment area of the dam received 100 cm rain. Hence, shutters of the dam have to be raised by 4 metres, the KSEB authorities said.
A high alert has been declared as the shutters may have to be opened.
