Thiruvananthapuram: The public now has the opportunity to add their names to the voters list as the ward division of local self government bodies have been cancelled. The voters list will be published when the threat of COVID-19 is completely overcome.

Earlier, it was decided to renew the voters list after the ward division was completed and before the election. However, the delimitation procedure to determine the boundaries of the wards have been cancelled. The election is scheduled to take place in October.

The publication of voters list in all local self government bodies except Mattannur Muncipality have been postponed due to Covid-19 scare. The local self government in Mattannur Muncipality has a tenure of two more years before the next election.

The voters list cannot be prepared immediately as most of the employees in local self government bodies are engaged in COVID-19 prevention activities. The list will be prepared without direct hearing due to the threat of COVID-19. If there are any discrepancies in the voters list, it can be solved before the election.

The election commission wants to use the voters list of the 2015 election. In that case, the corporations and wards governed by women will be made into general category and there would be reservation for women in corporations where men serve as the Mayor.
