Thiruvananthapuram: The fishermen, who have been protesting against the Vizhinjam port, blocked roads in several parts of the capital city on Monday resulting in severe traffic jams.
Reportedly, the protest staged by the Latin archdiocese and fishermen began at 8.30 am and will continue till 3 pm. Although the police arrived at the spot, they did not interfere with the protests.
The protesters blocked roads at Attingal, Station Kadavu, Chakkai and Poovar among other areas. Following which, traffic has been disrupted in Chakkai bypass and nearby areas. Fishermen from different parts of the district are taking part in the protests. They are using fishing boats to block roads in several places.
However, district collector Geromic George has ordered a ban on staging road blockades at Vizhinjam Junction and Mulloor. Sloganeering has also been banned in the area citing law and order issues.
Meanwhile, the protesters are planning to organise an art and cultural meet in front of the Secretariat on October 19 from 3 pm till 7 pm.
