Thiruvananthapuram: People who are protesting against the construction of the port have surrounded the Vizhinjam police station. The protestors are demanding the release of around five people, who were taken into custody after the clash on Saturday.
The protestors attacked police jeeps and blocked a van. According to reports, two police officials have been injured. One official was taken to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and the other was to a hospital in Vizhinjam.
About 200 more police officials have been deployed at the station. A special police team has also been set up under the leadership of Thiruvananthapuram DCP.
On Saturday, protests turned violent and 21 people sustained injuries after protesters, led by the Latin archdiocese, blocked trucks carrying construction materials. Police named Latin archdiocese archbishop Dr Thomas J Netto as the prime accused in the case registered over the clash.
The fresh protests in Vizhinjam started in August this year under the leadership of Trivandrum Latin Archdiocese. The protestors want the government to stop the project and study the impact on the shores. However, the government is not ready to stall the project. It had agreed to implement other demands of the protestors. Several rounds of talks ended inconclusive.
