Mobile phone worth Rs 20,000 seized from Viyyur Central Prison

Thrissur: A mobile phone was seized from an inmate during a surprise inspection conducted at the Viyyur Central Jail. A mobile phone worth Rs 20,000, and a SIM card were seized from the accused in Kevin murder case. The inspection was carried out on Wednesday, in the wake of a visit by the Director General of Prisons Shaik Darvesh Saheb.

Ganja was seized from the prison beauty parlour on September 11. A clash erupted between the inmates on August 27 in relation to ganja distribution in the prison. The warden who tried to stop the conflicts was seriously injured. Similarly, several mobile phones, headsets, chargers, and SIM cards were seized from the inmates in a very short span of time.

DGP Shaik Darvesh Saheb also warned the jail officials to be more vigilant after many prohibited items were repeatedly seized from inside the prison. Further, it was also decided to forward a circular to all prisons in this regard.

Prohibited items were seized from the inmates despite the detailed inspections that are carried out when convicts were first admitted to the jail. The authorities said the mobile phone jammers in the jail are not functioning.
