Kozhikode: The Vigilance will investigate into the disproportionate assets case booked against MLA K M Shaji. The Vigilance court ordered Kozhikode Vigilance SP to conduct a preliminary probe into the case. The order was issued by Vigilance judge K V Jayakumar.
The major reason for the probe is the house in Kozhikode owned by K M Shaji. The estimated value of the house is Rs 1,62,60,000. The probe team will mainly investigate into the source of this asset and how Shaji managed to accumulate the wealth.
The probe is ordered on the basis of the complaint filed by social worker and lawyer Adv M R Hareesh. According to the complaint, Shaji obtained huge amount from abroad and also conducted foreign trips misusing his official position. Also it is pointed out that K M Shaji is in the habit of purchasing land and vehicles in benami transactions.
Both K M Shaji and his wife do not have any other source of income other than his salary and benefits as an MLA. They do not own any farm or buildings that give any income. So, this is considered as the primary evidence for corruption, the complaint pointed out.
Presently, K M Shaji is facing inquiry regarding allegation that he received Rs 25 lakh as bribe for allotting Plus Two for a school in Azhikode constituency. As part of the probe, Shaji's houses in Kozhikode and Kannur were measured as per the direction of the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
ED officials also summoned Shaji's wife Asha for recording her statement at their office in Kozhikode on Monday. They have also asked K M Shaji to appear before them on Tuesday.
