Veteran filmmaker I V Sasi bags J C Daniel award
Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran Director I V Sasi has been chosen for the Kerala government’s J.C. Daniel Award 2014 in recognition of his sterling contributions to the Malayalam film industry. I V Sasi had directed as many as 150 films in different languages.
The award that was announced here on Monday is considered the top one in the industry and given by the Kerala government to honour a film personality for the work he has done.
The jury for the award was chaired by eminent writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair, and comprised actor Madhu, and Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman T. Rajivnath among others.
I V Sasi started his first film Utsavam with Ummer as the main hero. Many films followed like Abhinandanam, Anubhavam, Etha Evide Vare, Vaadakaikkoru Hridayam, Avalude Raavugal, Eezham Kadalinakkare, EeNaadu, Thusharam, Ahimsa, Ennaleingil Naale, Kaanamarayathu, Aaalkootathil Thaniye, Karibinpoovinakare, Adimakkal Udamakkal, 1921, Abkari, Anubhavam, Mrigaya, Eetta, Angeekaaram, Hridayame Sakshi, Inspector Balram among other hit films. Vellathooval was his last film directed in 2009.
He is presently engaged with Mohanlal in a film. He has directed films in several other languages, such as Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. He has directed Kamal Haasan in films like Guru, Alauddinum Arputha Vilakkum, Karishma and Eeta. His war-themed movie 1921, written by screenwriter T. Damodaran, was the first Malayalam movie to be nominated in the Italian Film Festival.
Born in West Hill, Kozhikode, I V Sasi finished his diploma from the Madras School of Fine Arts and entered movies. He has bagged National Award, Kerala State Film awards and Filmfare awards.
I. V. Sasi has collaborated with MT Vasudevan Nair, Padmarajan, T Damodaran.
Sasi also directed Mohanlal's all time hit" Devasuram" and both stars have acted together in a dozen of Sasi's films, after which they have been very rarely paired together.
Sasi's magic last worked in 2003 when "Balram Vs Tharadas" met with reasonable success. After that he did just one film and since then he has been in Chennai, while his wife Seema is seen more in TV screens than on the silver screen.
Sasi's biggest hit is "Angadi" in 1980 starring Jayan.
